Character Design
In summer this year, one of my friends' friend emailed me about a project. A yoghurt shop in Shanghai owned by her friend wants to find an illustrator to create monthly comic series around their brand character, in the same simple style with colour pencils and with Chinese characteristic. She saw the Haibao comic I did for Shanghai Squared, and thought this similar commission might fit me.
The cartoon character is the girl you can see below. I did several samples. It's not some style I usually do. I liked the ideas and effects I came out with though. And I was interested in the project much. So I applied for the position. But shame they've never got back to me.

Old Drawings
The player happened to play Daydream's piano music. The very past burst to my mind. When I was in uni, I hated accounting as my major. At that time I skipped classes to stay in the dorm to draw. With music, I kept drawing different portraits one after another, sometimes with tears dropping. My heart continued to be sensitive. Drawing was the way to let my sentiments out. It was my way to heal. I couldn't help looking back at some old drawings drawn at that time, about 5-6 years ago.
Once there was a girl,
You've no ideas what she'd been through
You don't know she was such something blue
a bird singing gloomy songs
The first time her wings broke
she realised she actually had them in two
The first time her heart broke
she believed her feelings were so true
that others could hurt but could never deprive
From then on, she started the long trip seeking home
Rather suffered than numb

Get Summer Back
It snowed again, heavily. I'd like to get more warmth a bit through thinking of some summer colour. So I did these.

Frost
Many eyes are covered by the splendid world
not be able to see the truth
The truth lies in the heart
only if you listen to its rhyme
you could be free

Tree Bark
Bleak wind, visits the hollow wilderness
Whistling an lonely tale
It was recorded on a piece of tree bark
You peeled off remember?
It was a promise on behalf of leaves, stars and squirrels
Beautiful flowers grew on the tree
But it's never told how long it lasts
The next autumn, I was left alone
around the tree where the bark's from
fallen leaves, full of the memory trail

Illustrations for Focus on Dalian
Early this month I was commissioned to do two editorial illustrations for the new issue Focus on Dalian magazine. This is my first time to work with them.Focus on Dalian is a bimonthly magazine created by people from different countries which is like a local platform with multi-cultural vision. I read some of its issues when I was living in Dalian. Didn't expect that they would contact me for contributions one day.
You can read the online version here: http://issuu.com/focus-on-dalian
And here are the two illos for your clearer views.

An Old Tree
One night I dreamed of a tree
An old story was revealed
That was hundreds of years ago
A girl heard a constant call from a tree
and came a long way to it
She realised that there was something she needed to see
So she was waiting there under the tree for years and years
until one day a young man travelled here
Then they knew

Published Illustration for Annalemma Magazine
I did an illustration for a fiction for Annalemma Magazine which was just published this week. The story is about an online relationship between a woman and a man which involves much of human's emotions and their longings for being not lonely. It's beautifully written.Have a read of the story here.
Annalemma magazine is "a literary and arts journal printed biannually and updated weekly online. Founded in 2007 with the expressed mission of engaging as many people as possible in the life-changing experience of telling good stories, Annalemma’s print issues are a lavish celebration of colorful artwork and photography that accompany short stories and essays from writers of all ages, nationalities, disciplines and echelons of the publishing world."

Long Scaled Chinese Painting
Asked by my mum, I did a Chinese painting with the length of 2 meters since we have an old long frame. I painted lotuses, one of my favorite flowers which stands for purity, cannot be stained by the society. The working space is poor.I only have one small table and two chairs to put the paper and all the gears. But the painting turned out okey enough to statisfy mum.

Those Women
I think those people who are studying art at school as they love it, who have opportunities to pursue art abroad as they love it, who are doing art as their career as they love art, are admirable.
我觉得那些在大学里学习艺术的人,那些出国深造艺术的人,那些有机会把艺术作为事业的人......是令人羡慕的。
